MIDDLE SCHOOL SWIM LEAGUE

GUIDELINES 2024

The purpose of the middle school swimming league is to promote the sport of swimming, ensure full participation of all swimmers, regardless of their level of ability, and enhance the educational experiences of students. The middle school swim league will strive to promote participation and sportsmanship to develop good citizens through interscholastic athletics, which provide equitable opportunities, positive recognition and learning experiences to students while maximizing the achievement of educational goals. 

GENERAL:
Eligibility – The Middle School Swim League will be open to swimmers in the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. No 5th graders will be allowed to swim, even exhibition. 

• Swimmers must attend the school they represent. Exception: Homeschool students may swim for a public school they are zoned for. 

• Swim caps from competitive teams are not allowed and will result in disqualification. 

• Swimmers may not compete in USA swimming banned suits. 

FEES:
TeamUnify: TeamUnify fees are paid directly to them. Contact information for TeamUnify: 
TeamUnify Setup Fee: $50.00 one-time fee for new schools to set up TeamUnify website.

SCSL League Fees: $225 for returning teams. If you are a new school or have 10 or less swimmers, you may join the league for $100. This fee is due to Diana Harviel before the first meet (October 11, 2024). Checks should be made out to Shelby County Middle School Swim League and mailed to Diana Harviel – 8151 Poplar Avenue – Germantown, TN 38138. League fees are due by Saturday October 11, 2024.  

A $50-dollar fine will be imposed if payment is received after that date.  Teams will not be allowed to swim if fees are not received by November 15, 2024. 

TeamUnify fees are paid directly to TeamUnify.  Fees are $200.00 per school. If your middle school and high school share a site only one payment of $200.00 is due.  

Roster: A copy of your roster that includes each swimmer’s full name, year in school, and sorted by gender needs to be emailed to Diana Harviel at scslswim@gmail.com. Preliminary roster due 10/11/24. Final roster is due by 11/15/2024. 

MEETS: There will be four meets this season. Three meets will take place prior to the championship meet.  Only the championship meet will be scored this season.

Timeline for Swim Meets:                                                                                       

1. Complete all entries and email to scslswim@gmail.com by the Tuesday noon prior to the Saturday meet. If you have any questions, contact Diana Harviel scslswim@gmail.com 

2. Warm-ups begin thirty minutes prior to start of meet. Teams will be assigned lanes prior to warm-ups.

3. Volunteer workers report to volunteer table 15 minutes prior to start of meet.                                                                                          

4. Starter, timers, and officials are in place 10 minutes prior to start of meet.

5. There will be a late fee penalized to teams turning in entries past the deadline: 1st offense $25; second offense $50.00; third offense $100.00.  All late fees must be paid in advance, or the team will not be allowed to participate in the meet.

Needed Volunteers for Meets - depending on number of teams entered in the meet, each team must provide two volunteers per meet. We need a total of 23 volunteers. Schools failing to provide a volunteer for each meet will be penalized. If a team fails to provide a volunteer their swimmers will not be allowed to participate in the meet. 

1. Starter/Announcer (2) (1 starts, 1 calls event to report to clerk of course).
2. Runners (1) will pick up the event slip and take to the judging table.                                                                                          3. Timers (20) (2 per lane, 2 back up) Timers will fill stopwatch times on to timers’ sheets – volunteers will sign up using www.signupgenius.com                                                        4. Meet Marshall (1)
 

Facilities: Meets will be held at St. Georges Independent school which is an 20-lane, 25-yard pool. Meets will be run using 10 lanes. Format: Warm-ups will occur thirty minutes prior to the start of the meets. Each meet will consist of 18 events. Girls start first with odd numbered events, and the boys have even numbered events.


School Limit: There is not a limit on number of swimmers per school per event.

Swimmer Limit: 4 Events Example: 3 Individual events, 1 relay: 2 individual events and 2 relays. A swimmer may not swim more that 3 individual events.

Relays – Relays are limited to 3 teams per school, per event. Only relays comprised of the same gender are eligible to score.  Teams with not enough boys or girls to forma a relay may enter mixed relay.  For schools with three or less swimmers may combine with another team to create a relay (mixed relays are not eligible to score) 


Scoring:  Only the championship meet will be scored. Entries should be emailed to scslswim@gmail.com Tuesday at noon before the date of the meet. If you have any questions, contact Diana Harviel at scslswim@gmail.com

Swimmers without seed times will be entered in the first heat, regardless of ability.

Disqualifications: USA Swimming certified stroke and turn officials will be used. Swimmers may swim in four events each meet, limited to two individual and two relay events.

 

REGULAR SEASON MEETS:
School Entry Limit: Teams can enter as many swimmers as they like in each event. Each team may only enter 3 relays per event 

Event Limit: Example: 4 events. Swimmers can swim up to 3 individual events, 1 relay: 2 individual events and 2 relays. Swimmers may not swim more than 3 individual events.     

Disqualifications: USA Swimming rules will apply. USA Swimming certified stroke and turn officials will be used.   

 

 

CHAMPIONSHIP MEET:
Facilities: Middle School Swimming Championship Meet will be held at the Bartlett Recreational Center. Touch pads and timing equipment will be used. 

Format: The Championship is open to all Middle School Swim Teams who have paid their dues, and all swimmers who have competed in at least one meet prior to the championship meet.  The meet is timed finals. There will be 18 events. 

Fee: There is no entry fee for this meet. 

Divisions: There will be two divisions: Division A (11 or more swimmers). Division B (10 or less swimmers) (May be changed due to team sizes)

School Entry Limit: There is no limit on the number of swimmers entered for the championship meet. Teams may swim as many swimmers and as many relays as they like. However, only 4 swimmers and one relay will score. Swimmers must have swum in one regular season meet to qualify for the championship meet.  

Event Limit: 4 events. Swimmers can swim up to 3 individual events, 1 relay: 2 individual events and 2 relays. Swimmers may not swim more than 3 individual events.   

For the 200 free a swimmer must have a time of 3.30:00 or faster to enter. Times will be verified through meet manager: To be eligible to swim in the championship meet, swimmers must have competed in at least one of this season’s middle school meets.

Scoring: 20 PLACES: 21, 19, 18, 17, 16, 15, 14, 13, 12, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. Relays are awarded double points. All events are timed finals. 

Swimmers who miss a race at the championship meet will only be allowed to swim if there is room but will be unable to score.

Awards: Individual awards place 1-20. Relays place 1-20. Team Awards - Each division would score 1st-3rd place in combined, male, and female scores. 

Disqualifications: USA Swimming rules will apply. USA Swimming certified stroke and turn officials will be used.
